The $14 Upgrade That Made These Facebook Marketplace Nightstands Look Better
There’s a little design trick we’ve come to love over the years, and it’s this: sometimes the smallest change in a room can completely shift how something feels.
Case in point: the two nightstands we just picked up on Facebook Marketplace for our beach shack. They were great at first glance. A nice height, a good size, and clean lines. The kind of find that makes you feel like you won a small internet lottery! But once we got them home and set them in place, something about them still felt a little generic. A little less charming and timeless than we thought.
Perfectly fine, just not very us. But then, PJ realized the problem: the hardware.
They had these very modern handles on them that felt a little too “right now.” You know the look. The kind of hardware that immediately dates a piece to the exact year it was made. Not bad, just very current and a little trendy, which doesn’t fit the vibe of our 1940s beach shack.
So PJ ordered a set of antique brass pulls (2 for $14!) online. Just simple pulls with that warm, slightly aged brass tone that always feels a little timeless.
When they arrived, PJ swapped them out in about ten minutes, and it completely changed the nightstands.
the old ones on the left, new ones on the right
Suddenly they didn’t feel like something trendy we grabbed online anymore. The brass gave them weight and a lot more character. That soft golden tone instantly warmed up the white nightstand and made the whole piece feel older and more intentional, like something you might stumble upon in a little coastal antique shop instead of scrolling past on Facebook Marketplace at 10:30 at night.
It’s funny how something so small can do that.
Hardware is one of those details most people don’t think about, but it’s basically the jewelry of furniture. And just like jewelry, it can completely change the outfit. Swap out the wrong pulls and a piece can feel cheap or trendy. Swap in the right ones and suddenly it feels classic.
In this case, a simple and affordable switch took these nightstands from “nice find” to something that truly feels special in the room.
And the best part is that it’s one of the easiest upgrades you can make. No sanding, no painting, no complicated DIY project. Just a screwdriver and about ten minutes of your time!
Now when we walk into the bedroom at the beach shack, those nightstands look like they’ve always belonged there. A little classic, a little coastal, and just old enough to feel interesting. They fit very snuggly in that tiny little room. They almost look like they were made for that space because of how perfectly they fit in.
We’re finishing up the painting of the walls and ceiling today, and our curtains arrive tomorrow. After that, we’ll hang some art and then the room will be complete! We’ll share some reveal photos soon!
