The Little Luxuries We’re Prioritizing This Fall

There’s something about fall that makes us want to slow down.

Maybe it’s the fact that the days are getting shorter, the evenings are getting cooler, or that familiar feeling of wanting to spend a little more time at home. After months of being outside, traveling, swimming, staying up late and generally squeezing as much as possible out of summer, fall feels like an invitation to settle back in.

And lately, we’ve been thinking about the little things that make that transition even better. You know, the little luxuries that make an ordinary Tuesday night feel a bit more special. The really good candle. The ridiculously soft blanket. Coffee in a favorite mug. Putting on pajamas before dinner. Making soup and actually sitting at the table to eat it.

Basically, we're leaning into the idea that you don't need a big reason to make everyday life feel a little luxurious.

Here are a few of the little luxuries we're prioritizing this fall.

A Really Good Cup of Coffee

Fall is when our morning coffee ritual starts feeling like an event again.

We're talking about a warm mug between your hands, something delicious brewing in the kitchen, maybe a little cinnamon or maple syrup, and actually taking a few minutes to enjoy it instead of gulping it down while running out the door.

We've also become big believers in having the things at home that make coffee feel a little more special. A beautiful mug, good beans, a milk frother, a seasonal syrup or whatever your particular coffee weakness happens to be.

Because if we're going to drink coffee every single morning, we might as well make it one of the best parts of the morning.

The Bed You Can't Wait to Get Into

One of the best things about fall is having an excuse to make the bedroom ridiculously cozy.

We're bringing out the heavier blankets, adding layers to the bed and generally leaning into that hotel-bed feeling. There's something particularly luxurious about climbing under a pile of soft bedding when the temperature outside has finally dropped.

And honestly, a cozy bedroom can change the entire feeling of your evening.

Instead of seeing bedtime as the end of the day, it starts to feel like something you're looking forward to.

Taking a Shower and Putting on Pajamas Early

There is a very specific moment in fall when you realize you can take a shower at 6:30 p.m., put on pajamas and simply be done with the outside world, and we fully intend to take advantage of it.

A hot shower, really good body wash, moisturizer, a fluffy robe, slippers and pajamas is one of those inexpensive little luxuries that really feels extravagant. Is it technically too early to be in pajamas? Maybe. Are we going to let that stop us?

Absolutely not.

Lighting a Candle Before Dinner

We've always loved a candle, but fall makes candle season feel particularly justified.

As soon as it starts getting dark earlier, lighting a candle while dinner is cooking instantly makes the house feel warmer and more inviting.

And we're leaning toward the scents that make the house smell like fall without necessarily making it smell like a pumpkin candle exploded inside.

Think amber, cedar, fig, sandalwood, vanilla, apple and warm spices.

There's something about walking into a room illuminated by candlelight on a cool evening that makes even leftovers feel vaguely sophisticated.

The Good Blanket

Every fall needs a really good blanket, like the kind that you immediately want to wrap around yourself. One for the sofa. One for the bedroom. Maybe one for the porch.

And if everyone in the house develops an attachment to the same blanket and there is eventually a nightly negotiation over who gets it, well, that's just part of the experience.

Making Dinner Feel Like an Occasion

Fall is when cooking at home starts getting really good again.

Soups, chili, pasta, roast chicken, mashed potatoes, casseroles and all of those meals that feel slightly ridiculous to make when it's 95 degrees outside suddenly sound perfect.

But we're also trying to make the experience of dinner feel special.

Using the good plates. Pouring something into an actual glass. Lighting a candle. Putting a little effort into the table. Sitting down instead of eating over the kitchen counter.

It doesn't have to be fancy! Sometimes the luxury is simply deciding that a random Wednesday deserves a proper dinner.

Flowers, Branches and Whatever Fall Gives Us

One of our favorite things about changing seasons is letting the season itself become part of the house. In fall, that might mean flowers from the grocery store, dried stems, branches from the yard, pumpkins on the porch or a bowl of apples sitting on the kitchen counter.

It doesn't have to be elaborate. Sometimes a few branches in a big vase are enough to make a room feel completely different.

And there's something nice about decorating with things that actually feel connected to the season rather than buying an entirely new collection of fall decorations every year.

Making the House Smell Like Fall

Fall has a smell.

Maybe it's woodsmoke. Maybe it's cinnamon. Maybe it's freshly baked something. Maybe it's leaves and cedar and that crisp smell in the air after a cool evening.

We're trying to bring more of that feeling indoors.

Candles, room sprays, diffusers, simmer pots, seasonal soaps. Whatever makes your house smell like you want to curl up on the sofa and stay there for the rest of the night.

It's one of the easiest ways to make your home feel different for a new season.

The Fall Weekend Morning

There are few things more luxurious than a fall Saturday morning with nowhere to be.

Sleeping a little later. Making coffee. Cooking breakfast. Staying in pajamas. Opening the windows if it's cool enough. Reading something you've been meaning to read. Letting the morning unfold without immediately checking a list of things that need to get done.

Summer mornings tend to have somewhere to go. Fall mornings feel like they can linger, and we're trying to let them.

An Evening Outside

After months of avoiding the outdoors during the hottest part of the day, one of the great pleasures of fall is finally wanting to sit outside again.

A blanket over your lap. A comfortable chair. Something warm to drink. Maybe a fire going. You don't need to be doing anything. In fact, the whole luxury is that you're not!

It's just sitting outside at the end of the day and enjoying the fact that the weather is finally cooperating.

Buying Fewer Things, But Better Things

Maybe this is the biggest little luxury we're prioritizing this fall.

We're trying to be a little more intentional about the things we bring into our homes. Instead of buying five inexpensive versions of something, we'd rather have one really good version that we love and will use for years.

The beautiful mug you'll reach for every morning.

The blanket you'll pull out every October.

The sweater you'll wear for the next ten years.

The candle you'll buy again because it makes the entire house smell incredible.

The good olive oil you actually use.

The idea isn't to spend more money for the sake of spending more money. It's about making the everyday things you already use feel better.

Making Ordinary Life Feel Special

Maybe that's what we love most about fall.

It doesn't take much to make life feel cozy.

You don't need an elaborate vacation or a packed calendar or a house full of people. Sometimes all it takes is a candle burning while dinner cooks, a warm drink in your favorite mug, clean pajamas, a blanket on the sofa and a movie you've already seen three times.

Fall gives us permission to enjoy those little things.

To stay home.

To linger over dinner.

To go to bed early.

To make soup.

To light the candle.

To put on the pajamas.

To sit outside until we're just cold enough to justify going back inside.

And maybe that's the real luxury we're prioritizing this fall: making the everyday parts of our lives feel worth savoring.

Because sometimes living well is less about having more, and more about noticing how good what you already have can feel.
