World Refugee Day: Why Refugees Matter to All of Us

Every year on June 20, the world observes World Refugee Day, a day dedicated to honoring the strength, courage, and resilience of people who have been forced to flee their homes because of war, violence, conflict, or persecution. It is a day to listen to refugee stories, celebrate their contributions, and remember that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a life forever changed.

For PJ and me, World Refugee Day is especially meaningful. For the past seven years, we have had the privilege of working with USA for UNHCR to help raise awareness about the global refugee crisis. Throughout that time, we've learned something that continues to stay with us: refugees are not defined by what they have lost. They are defined by their resilience, their hope, and their determination to rebuild.

What Is a Refugee?

A refugee is someone who has been forced to leave their home country because they fear persecution, violence, or conflict and can no longer safely return home. Refugees often leave behind everything they know, including homes, careers, schools, communities, and loved ones, in search of safety.

Many spend years, sometimes decades, rebuilding their lives in new countries while carrying the memories of the places they once called home.

The Reality of Displacement Today

The numbers can be difficult to comprehend.

Today, nearly 118 million people around the world have been forcibly displaced from their homes due to conflict, persecution, violence, or human rights abuses. That's roughly one out of every 70 people on Earth.

Among them are:

  • More than 41 million refugees worldwide.

  • Approximately 9 million asylum seekers awaiting decisions on their claims.

  • Nearly 69 million people displaced within their own countries.

Even more striking, the majority of the world's refugees are hosted by low and middle income countries, many of which are facing challenges of their own.

These numbers represent families seeking safety, parents trying to provide stability for their children, students pursuing education, and people hoping for the chance to build a future.

This Year's Theme: The Power of Sport

As the United States hosts the World Cup this year, World Refugee Day 2026 highlights the role that sport can play in the lives of people forced to flee.

For refugees, sports can be far more than recreation. A soccer field can become a place of healing. A team can provide friendship and belonging. A game can help a child regain confidence after experiencing unimaginable hardship.

Programs like Amaanah Lions in Houston and Soccer Without Borders across the United States are helping refugee and immigrant youth find community, build confidence, and create opportunities through sports. These programs remind us that sometimes the simplest things, kicking a ball, joining a team, feeling included, can be life-changing.

What We've Learned From Refugee Stories

Over the years, we've had the opportunity to hear countless refugee stories through our work with USA for UNHCR. Every story is different, but one theme appears again and again: resilience.

We've heard about parents who crossed borders to protect their children. Students who continued pursuing an education despite years of displacement. Athletes, artists, business owners, and community leaders who rebuilt their lives after losing nearly everything.

Their stories are reminders that refugees are not statistics. They are neighbors, coworkers, classmates, and friends. They are people with dreams, talents, and aspirations, just like all of us.

How We Can Help

Many people wonder what difference one person can make in the face of such a large global challenge. The truth is that small actions matter.

You can:

  • Learn about refugee issues and share accurate information.

  • Support organizations providing lifesaving aid and long-term solutions.

  • Amplify refugee voices and stories.

  • Welcome newcomers into your community.

  • Advocate for policies that protect people fleeing danger.

  • Participate in World Refugee Day events and awareness campaigns.

Even starting a conversation can help build understanding and compassion.

Standing With Refugees

World Refugee Day is ultimately about recognizing our shared humanity.

None of us chooses where we're born. None of us can guarantee that conflict, persecution, or disaster will never affect our own communities. What we can choose is how we respond when others need help.

This World Refugee Day, we invite you to stand #WithRefugees. Learn their stories. Celebrate their resilience. Support the organizations doing this important work. And remember that hope often begins when someone chooses to care.

For seven years, we've been proud to support USA for UNHCR and the work they do around the world. Today, we're grateful for the opportunity to continue raising awareness and honoring the millions of refugees whose courage inspires us every day.

Because everyone deserves safety. Everyone deserves dignity. And everyone deserves the chance to dream about what comes next.
