When Winter Comes Knocking, No One Should Be Left in the Cold

Across the globe this winter, millions of families who were forced to flee their homes are staring into a season that could break them. Refugees from Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, and beyond are facing biting cold, snow, and freezing nights with too little shelter, heat, or warm clothing—and the aid meant to protect them is stretched thinner than ever.

Families are living in makeshift tents, damaged houses, or drafty shelters that offer almost no insulation against winter’s worst. In places where temperatures plummet well below freezing, that’s not discomfort—it’s danger. The UN Refugee Agency, USA for UNHCR, is racing to deliver winter life‑support, but the scale of need means every moment and every dollar count.

USA for UNHCR’s teams are on the ground:

  • Distributing thermal blankets, warm clothes, and insulating materials to keep out wind, snow, and wet cold.

  • Providing heaters and fuel where electricity and heat are unreliable or nonexistent.

  • Offering cash assistance so families can prioritize what they need most—whether that’s fuel, food, medicine, or repairs to make a shelter habitable.

Last year’s winter cash support helped families cover essentials like gas refills, shelter maintenance, and firewood—things that made the difference between surviving and losing hope.

Still, funding shortfalls and cuts mean that too many households could enter winter unprotected. Blankets and coats can’t wait. Repairing homes before snow falls matters. Fuel in a stove can mean the world to a child shivering through the night.

This moment calls for urgent action. Your support delivers real, life‑saving warmth.
