Do You Have a Song with Your Significant Other?

Do You Have a Song with Your Significant Other?

Lately, when we’re not listening to the Zombies soundtrack or Encanto (both good choices, I might add), I force the kids to listen to songs that I like while we drive in the car. Here recently it’s been Taylor Swift, an artist the entire family can agree on loving.

Anna and I have been revisiting Speak Now, her third album that came out all the way back in 2010. When we got to the song “Enchanted” I told her that it was mine and dad’s song together. And then I turned the volume up. And up. And maybe even up some more.

I always forget how much I love that song until I listen to it again. Have you ever heard it? The melody is dreamy and beautiful, instantly taking you to another time and place entirely. For me, when I listen to it even after all this time, I’m suddenly 19 again and falling in love with this boy I had only ever dreamed about. The lyrics perfectly describe my feelings for PJ and the first night we ever spent together:

There I was again tonight
Forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old tired, lonely place
Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face
All I can say is, it was enchanting to meet you

After staying up all night talking about our pasts and our dreams for the future, I wondered where it would go from here with PJ. He had just broken up with his boyfriend of three years two days before, and I wondered if this would be the last time I saw him. Would he go back to his previous lover? Would we ever have another night like this one?

Taylor Swift goes on to confess:

The lingering question kept me up
2 AM, who do you love?
I wonder 'til I'm wide awake
And now I'm pacing back and forth
Wishing you were at my door
I'd open up and you would say, "Hey"

It’s like she could hear all my fears and insecurities and decided to jot them down real quick and put them into an almost six minute song. Swift closes the song with a plea, one that maybe spoke to me more than anything else in the entire song:

This is me praying that
This was the very first page
Not where the story line ends
My thoughts will echo your name, until I see you again
These are the words I held back, as I was leaving too soon
I was enchanted to meet you
Please don't be in love with someone else
Please don't have somebody waiting on you
Please don't be in love with someone else
Please don't have somebody waiting on you

This song still gives me chills! And if you’re wondering, PJ’s song for me is “Better Man” by James Morrison and it always makes my heart beat fast whenever he plays it. If you have time, read the lyrics. They’re so beautiful.

Do you have a song with your partner? What is it? I would love to hear!! Let’s get as mushy and gushy with it as we can, because why not?
